How to Choose a Slat Panel Finish: Oak, Walnut, Black Ash, Rustic or Colour

Last updated: October 2026

Choose your slat panel finish by the feel of the room: Classic Oak for warm and natural, Walnut or Black Ash for rich and dark, the Rustic range for character, and colour finishes like Snow or Moss for a modern scheme. Prices for a 2.4m Akupanel range from R1,850 (Wrapped) to R3,195 (Black Ash and Rustic). Always order samples before you decide, because real wood looks different in every room.

Light or dark?

  • Small or low-light rooms: lighter finishes like Classic Oak with beige or grey felt, Rustic Natural Oak or Snow keep the space open.
  • Large or bright rooms: darker finishes like Walnut, Black Ash or Rustic Smoked Oak add depth and make a wall the focal point.
  • Home cinemas and TV walls: dark finishes reduce reflections around the screen.

What difference does the felt colour make?

On Classic Oak you choose black, grey or beige felt. The felt shows in the 13mm gaps between slats. Black felt gives the strongest contrast and the most graphic stripe; grey and beige felt soften the look and make the wall feel lighter.

Rustic or Classic?

Classic finishes have a cleaner, more even grain. Rustic finishes show knots, cracks and stronger grain on purpose. Neither is better; Rustic suits relaxed, natural interiors and hospitality, Classic suits clean, contemporary spaces.

Real wood vs Wrapped

Classic Oak, Walnut, Black Ash and the Rustic finishes use real wood veneer, so every panel is unique and the colour changes slowly with light. Wrapped finishes use a high-quality wood-textured foil and are clearly labelled. They cost less but don't have real wood's variation. More in real wood vs foil.

Mixing finishes

You can combine finishes in one space. At Moreleta Corner in Pretoria, Rustic Natural Oak, Black Ash and Snow work together across walls and ceilings. A simple approach at home: one hero finish on the main wall and a second, quieter finish on a ceiling or headboard.

How to choose with samples

  1. Order 2 to 4 A4 samples. Most are R95; some colour finishes are R70.
  2. Hold them on the actual wall, not on a table.
  3. Look in daylight and at night, with your own lighting on.
  4. Check against your floor, sofa and cabinetry.

Frequently asked questions

Which slat panel finish suits most rooms?

Classic Oak is the most versatile: it suits most interiors and comes with a choice of black, grey or beige felt.

Which finish is cheapest?

The Wrapped finishes, at R1,850 for a 2.4m panel. The cheapest real wood option is Classic Oak with black felt at R2,150.

Will my panel look exactly like the sample?

Not exactly. Real wood varies from panel to panel in grain, knots and colour, and it changes colour slowly with light. That's natural character, not a defect.

Can I paint or oil the panels to change the colour?

We don't recommend it. The panels are left untreated, and finishes can change the colour and texture.
