To work out how many acoustic slat panels you need, divide your wall width in metres by 0.6 and round up. Every Akupanel is 600mm wide, so a 3.6m wall needs 6 panels and a 4m wall needs 7. Then choose the panel height that matches your wall: 2.4m panels for standard walls, 3m panels for higher ones.
Step 1: Measure the width
Measure the width you want to cover, not necessarily the whole wall. Many feature walls cover only the section behind a TV, bed or desk. Divide by 0.6 and round up.
| Width to cover | Panels needed |
|---|---|
| 1.2m | 2 |
| 1.8m | 3 |
| 2.4m | 4 |
| 3.0m | 5 |
| 3.6m | 6 |
| 4.2m | 7 |
| 4.8m | 8 |
| 6.0m | 10 |
When the width doesn't divide exactly, the last panel is trimmed to fit by cutting through the felt with a knife. Each product page also has a panel calculator: enter your height and width and it tells you how many you need.
Step 2: Choose the panel height
| Wall or feature height | Panel to use |
|---|---|
| Up to 0.6m (pattern walls, small features) | Akupanel 60 (600 × 600mm) |
| Up to 1.2m (headboards, half walls, kitchen islands) | Akupanel 120 (1200 × 600mm) |
| Up to 2.4m (most rooms) | Akupanel 240 (2400 × 600mm) |
| 2.4m to 3.0m | Akupanel 300 (3000 × 600mm), cut to height |
| Over 3.0m | Stack and cut panels, or centre the panels and finish above or below with lighting or another material |
Panels can be cut to height with a circular saw or jigsaw. After cutting, screw the loose slat ends back through the felt with small (about 15mm) screws so they don't hang free.
Step 3: Add what you need to finish it
- Finishing slats for each exposed side edge: 22mm finishing slats in 2.4m or 3m lengths. For a shelf-style top on a headboard or half wall, use the 67mm finishing slat.
- Fixings: our guide uses 15 screws per panel, so one 100-pack of screws covers about six panels. Or use mounting glue.
- Rawplugs if your wall needs them.
Worked example: a 3.6m × 2.6m living room wall
- Width: 3.6 ÷ 0.6 = 6 panels.
- Height: 2.6m is taller than 2.4m, so use Akupanel 300 and cut each panel to 2.6m.
- Finishing: two 22mm finishing slats in 3m length, one for each side, cut to height.
- Fixings: 6 panels × 15 screws = 90 screws, so one 100-pack.

How many panels for a ceiling?
Use the same width rule, with the panel length running across the room. Ceiling panels are screwed into battens fixed at 40cm spacing, not directly to the ceiling board. Our ceiling installation guide has the details.
How many panels do I need for good acoustics?
For a noticeable reduction in echo, cover about 25% of the room's wall area. A living room with four 4m × 2.4m walls has 38.4m² of wall, so aim for about 9.6m², roughly seven 2.4m panels. One full feature wall often gets you most of the way. More on that in do acoustic slat panels reduce noise?
What about plug points, switches and TV mounts?
You don't need extra panels for these. Measure their position, mark it on the panel, and cut the opening with a jigsaw or track saw. If your wall has lots of cut-outs or awkward angles, it can be worth ordering one spare panel, or letting our installers measure for you.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is one acoustic slat panel?
Every Thula Wall Akupanel is 600mm wide.
How many panels do I need for a 3m wall?
Five. Divide the width by 0.6: 3 ÷ 0.6 = 5.
My wall is higher than 2.4m. What should I use?
Use the 3m Akupanel and cut it to height, or for walls over 3m, stack and cut panels or centre them and finish the space above or below.
How many screws do I need per panel?
Our installation guide uses 15 screws per panel, screwed through the felt into the wall.
